Lummer Dai Regional Distance Education and Research Centre

ITANAGAR, June 2: A “new door” has been opened to the literary world with the inauguration of the Lummer Dai Regional Distance Education and Research Centre in Assam’s Bihpuria under Lakhimpur district last morning.

Established by the Asom Sahitya Sabha, the study and research centre was opened by the Sabha president Rongbong Terang at the Dharmeswar Kotoki Memorial building, Bihpuria which also houses the Sabha’s Bihpuria branch office.

In his inaugural speech, a visibly elated Terang, said, “A new door has been opened to the world of literature today with the launching of the research centre, named after late Lummer Dai, an eminent litterateur from Arunachal Pradesh.”

“The research centre would store the entire literary works of the two great personalities – late Lummer Dai and late Dharmeswar Kotoki – for the scholars intending to do research on their lives and creative literary works,” divulged the Sabha president. He further said that a new chapter has been added to the hill-plain furthering the traditional relationship between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

“The main motive behind setting up of the study and research centre was to preserve and promote the ethnic languages of North East region and facilitate detailed studies on the regional languages, mainly Assamese and other ethnic languages of the region which are on the brink of being extinct,” said Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi, the general secretary of the Sabha.

He said the centre will offer all possible facilities for higher studies, including PhDs, MPhil and post-graduate courses on Assamese and assist the non-Assamese people inhabiting the state and other parts of the globe to learn the language in a scientific way. The courses will be affiliated to the Gauhati and Dibrugarh universities. Efforts are also being made to bring the centre under the Union government’s flagship programme, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

The study materials for the courses have already been finalized, said Dr Rajbongshi, adding that the centre’s doors are open to anybody living in the State, the country and even for those outside India who want to study and do research on the languages of Assam. He further said that the hard copies of the study material would be provided through post and the same would also be uploaded on the website for the researchers.

Dr Rajbongshi further informed that the work of the research centre would be extended to the states of Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Orissa, Nagaland and West Bengal as well.

“Along with Assamese, we will give due emphasis to other ethnic languages of the region like Bodo, Mishing, Deori, Karbi, Adi etc so as to make this centre a Vidyamandir in its real sense of the term,” he said.

Reminding the literary circle about the danger looming large on the regional languages including Assamese of being extinct, Rajbongshi said, “We will turn into museum within no time provided we don’t preserve our own languages He, however, said being the apex literary body of the State, the Sabha’s stride will continue for ever towards the preservation and promotion of the regional languages.

Acknowledging the “rare” honour being accorded to late Lummer Dai by the Asom Sahitya Sabha and the people of Assam, the president of Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society, Y D Thongchi said, “I hope the thread of socio-cultural links between Assam and Arunachal has been reinforced with today’s opening of the Lummer Dai research centre.”

Meanwhile, in a significant development, Gulok Chandra Hazarika, a renowned social worker of Assam’s Bihpuria, announced to donate a plot of land, measuring 5 bighas for further expansion of infrastructure for the ‘Lummer Dai Regional Distance Education and Research Centre’ at Bihpuria.

The announcement from the ardent enthusiast of literature, Hazarika, 78, came at a time when the government of late Dai’s own State, Arunachal Pradesh was yet to take any initiative to recognize the literary luminary and his contributions to the literary field.

Expressing his profound sense of happiness on materializing of the Asom Sahitya Sabha’s Regional Distance Education and Research Centre at Bihpuria which was named after late Lummer Dai, Hazarika termed the day as ‘historic’.

He said the centre would serve as a bridge towards reinforcing the age-old socio-cultural ties between the people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

ITANAGAR, June 2: The 2nd Lummer Dai Memorial Literary Award-2011 was conferred on the noted litterateur and researcher of folk culture, Basanta Das of Assam’s Diphu.

The award carrying a citation and a cash reward of Rs 25,000 was handed over to one of the close friends of ailing Das, who is undergoing treatment in a Mumbai hospital, by Asom Sahitya Sabha president Rongbong Terang, the recipient of prestigious Padmashree Award, in an impressive function held at the Bihpuria College auditorium last evening.

The literary award was instituted by the Sabha in 2009 in memory of ‘Paharar Shile Shile’ famed writer and winner of Sabha-instituted prestigious Sitanath Brahma Choudhury Award for his novel ‘Koinar Mulya’. Late Dai’s other literary contributions included in the form of all-time favourites ‘Prithivir Hanhi’, ‘Mon Aru Mon’ (for which he was presented a talent-hunt award by Union Ministry of Education and Youth Welfare) and ‘Upar Mahal’.

Born in 1940 at Diphu in Karbi Anglong, the winner of 2nd Lummer Dai award, Basanta Das is the adorer of Karbi culture and literature. A retired govt official, he is a well-known storyteller, novelist, essayist and screenplay writer. He got popularity among the mass Assamese readership for his novel ‘Junction’ (1975) and research-oriented book ‘Karbi Sanskritir Itihash’. Das, who is suffering from a critical illness and undergoing treatment in Mumbai, will be operated upon within a day or two, said Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi, general secretary of the Sabha during the function.

In his chairmanship address, Sabha president Terang said, “I am exceedingly happy today to see to it that lots of discussions held on literary and cultural legacy left behind by Arunachal’s proud son, Lummer Dai, who envisaged to Adi society to which belonged through his creative writings.”

“Had he (late Dai) not built the cultural link between Assam and Arunachal, there would not have been the grand reunion of the people from both States today,” he remarked.

Terang, who himself is a Karbi, drew resemblance and described as “silent preachers” late Dai and Basanta Das, who despite being non-Assamese have contributed immensely towards the growth of Assamese literature.

The Sabha president, who earlier inaugurated the Lummer Dai Regional Distance Education and Research Centre, exuded hope that the centre would help strengthen the Assam-Arunachal ties, besides bolstering Sabha’s works to further promote Assamese, one of the advanced languages of the world.

Dr Rajbongshi said that the Lummer Dai research centre would definitely bolster the cultural integration between the hills and the plains, adding that Sabha’s initiatives are on to make the research centre a ‘world class’ institution in days to come.

Offering his tributes to late Dai on his birthday, Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society (APLS) president Y D Thongchi said, “Lummer Dai was the first tribal writer under whose endeavour the Assamese language got “a new direction”.

“This award (Lummer Dai Memorial Literary Award) should have been instituted either by Arunachal govt or APLS, but before we initiate, the Sabha took the pains to honour our State’s noted litterateur,” Thongchi, who himself got inspired by creative writings of his kokaideus (elder brothers) late Dai and Terang, and penned ‘Mouna Unth Mukhor Hriday’ and ‘Shaw Kota Manuh’, said in a lighter vein.

“There are lots of Botas (awards) in the literary field but winning the ‘Bota’ instituted after the literary luminaries - to name among them in the likes of ‘Kalaguru’ Bishnu Rabha, Sitanath Brahma Choudhury, ‘Sahityasurja’ Lummer Dai, Munin Borkakoti et al really matters,” said the Sahitya Academy Awardee, while congratulating the Lummer Dai award winner, Basanta Das.

Sharing her feelings with the mammoth gathering of intelligentsia and aficionados of literature, Nanni Dai, Editor of Echo of Arunachal, said, “Today, I am feeling proud of being the better-half of the great novelist, who has rightly been recognized by Asom Sahitya Sabha for his contributions to the world of Assamese literature. My spouse silently carried out his literary sojourn and never thought of getting rewarded by either side,” said Dai while regretting that Arunachal govt has yet not recognized her spouse’s contributions to the tribal society.

Delighted over the rare honours given to her husband by Assam’s apex literary body and its people, she said, “Assam (albeit affected by the scourge of insurgency) is really a heaven where love and affection prevails.”

Earlier, the award function started with the presentation of a documentary on the life and literary works of late Dai which was produced by the Sabha in 2009 – the year of institution of the literary award, presented to Swarna Bora, another well-known writer from Assam. It was followed by “Chiro chenehi mur…”, the Sabha’s song, performed by a team of women, and presentation of traditional gifts to the dignitaries and guests by the organizers.

Govt must prove itself

Dear Editor,

Day by day many bad & good developments takes place around the world and with the controversies of Osama Bin Laden'S killing; some statement of our top Military brass struck my mind. Many reactions were there with the killing of Bin Laden by US navy seal commandos, where our country's Army General & other top rankings were asked whether India is lacking in technologies or can India go ahead like US force in counter-terrorism with technologies like America.

The answer was obviously "Yes". India has got latest technology in all aspects.

But, was it not a shame that the technologies like ISRO, Sukoi, IAF this or that failed to trace the missing/killer chopper of our late beloved CM Dorjee Khandu & others. How & why? Or what is the stand of GOI towards its state Arunachal & its people? Why the Govt. of India (GOI) did not use its latest technology in the hour of need.

What is the attitude of GOI towards the people of Arunachal Pradesh or is it true that Arunachal is kept only to safe guard its Indian territory from "China" or other International boundary. Is it not a step motherly treatment towards our state despite having fast class technologies? Govt. of India (GOI) must prove its stand/attitude towards Arunachal Pradesh at this hour of grief.

Yours,

M. Wangsu

A village from the Dark Age

Dear Editor,

Siluk is one of most neglected village in Mebo area of East Siang distt. Pasighat has celebrated its 100 years in Feb 2011 but Siluk which is just 30 to 32 km from Pasighat and 14 km from Mebo village is still living in ‘Dark Age’.

I would like to highlight lots of grievances faced by my village fellows on behalf of them. First of all let me start with the basic necessity that is electricity and water supply. It’s been long years the villagers are waiting for ‘light’. There are other alternative departments like APEDA, but the problem is that the nearby villages which happen to have electricity have been distributed solar lamps too. There is a video house which is run by a mini generator and every evening the villagers go to the video house to recharge their mobile by giving Rs 10 to 15. And there are two water tanks in the village but some part of the village has to use the water from a river which is quite unhygienic for drinking. Every morning and evening they have to fight with the GREF labourers in collecting water.

And the second is that the said village is 14 km from Mebo town and the road condition is very good but there are no proper bus services, earlier after the introduction of JNRUM bus services by the state govt. they provided a service for a month or two and then I don’t know who stole it away, one private bus was plying but it’s been more than a month there is no bus services. It is very difficult to go to Mebo town and Pasighat during an emergency. There is one medical sub-center but somebody say doctor has been posted and some say only one nurse. The villager who fall sick or in any emergency has to go door to door to those people who got a vehicle; asking for a lift is impossible but they go to them just to enquire whether they are going to the town and if there is empty seat?

I would like to request our local MLA Ralom Borang to provide those basic necessities to the poor of poorest village called Siluk. All I am asking is one regular transport service, electricity, and equal water supply to every part of the village and a doctor and a nurse who stay in the village not in Mebo or Pasighat.

Dear readers this village is not a simple village, she has provided lots of her sons to serve the people of Arunachal. Once it was known as the most officer producing village, the renowned writer late Lummer Dai whom every daily talks about, one of the most senior reputed advocate Muk Pertin, are just few of them.

Yours,

J. Nung Yirang,

Siluk, (on email)

The saga of Longding - Bimalapur road

Dear Editor,

The Longding - Bimalapur road  funded for renovation after long year since its existence under NABARD/NLCPR in the year 2004-2005 as its completion year 2010, had been a great concern for people of the area. Its renovation project had caused a big concern with its lowest work quality, especially in regards with carpeting of the road and many broken R/wall and B/wall despite of sufficient fund and the work being executed 1 or 2 years back only.

The execution of work quality is very low that many walls/roads are broken/swept away along with roads already with big pot holes & some places are remaining as before.

NGO's and intellectual group must come up against it as NEC too had funded some crores along with NABARD.  But to the innocent people’s ill luck nothing had actually taken place practically & yet the present renovation work is to be taken place as expected from concern executing department.

Wancho Community NGO's, student Unions and other intellectual group should inspect the renovation work physically. I also request our representatives/legislator to physically inspect it for greater cause of common masses and punish the concerned people for cheating the people through development which has not taken place actually. Along with RTI and Enquiry by some intellectual group, public must also co-operate for larger interest of the area and learn the importance of area development, its execution process and fight for own instead of keeping mum.

Yours,

A concerned citizen

RGGVY works not satisfactory

Dear Editor,

The implementation of the Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) scheme for electrification of Essi Lite village under Tirbin in West Siang district is not up to the satisfaction.  There is every possibility of uprooting electric poles as their bases are not properly maintained. It seems that the standard specification which should be maintained for such construction has not been followed while erecting the posts.

Therefore, I request the Chief Engineer, Power (electrical) department to issue directives to concerned executive engineer of Aalo division to stop the work and send an expert team to investigate the matter.

Yours,

Iba Jilen

Tirbin, West Siang
